There are two public transportation alternatives between Istanbul Airport (IST) and the city center. These are HAVAIST and IETT buses.
The White buses are called the HAVAIST bus. And the Yellow buses are called the IETT bus.
Both buses are waiting you at the exit of the Istanbul Airport (IST) international arrivals terminal to take you to the city centre.
Now Let’s give detailed information about these two different public transport alternatives.
HAVAIST busses (the white one) take you directly from Istanbul Airport (IST) to specific locations in the city center. (e.g. Taksim Square)
HAVAIST busses serve more than 50 different destinations in Istanbul. Taksim Square and Sultanahmet are the most preferred destinations for tourists. (Hotels are usually located in these regions.)
The fare of the HAVAIST buses from Istanbul Airport (IST) to Taksim is 30 TL. (about 4-5 dollars, 4-5 euros)
The fare of the HAVAIST busses from Istanbul Airport (IST) to Sultanahmet is 30 TL. (about 4-5 dollars, 4-5 euros)
You can pay the bus fare by cash or credit card on the HAVAIST busses.
HAVAIST buses are available every half hour for 24 hours.
We recommend HAVAIST buses to you to go downtown from IST Airport.
IETT buses (the yellow one) are cheaper than the HAVAIST buses, but less comfortable. There are also too many stops on one line. For this reason, it takes more time to go to the city center than the HAVAIST buses.
To go to Taksim from IST Airport, you can come to Mecidiyekoy from Istanbul Airport (IST) by IETT buses. After Mecidiyeköy you can go Taksim Square by metro or bus from Mecidiyekoy. The line number of the IETT bus from the Istanbul Airport (IST) to Mecidiyekoy is H-2.
The fare of the IETT busses is from Istanbul Airport to city center is 7,00 TL (2 full fare-about 1 dollar) (full fare is 3,50 TL)
Cash or credit card on IETT busses is not valid, you can only pay with “Istanbulkart“. You can buy “Istanbulkart” from the buffets at the IST Airport. And you can upload credits to “Istanbulkart” in buffets and vending machines.
IstanbulKart is a payment method used in public transport in Istanbul. Only Istanbulkart is valid in all public transport system in Istanbul (IETT buses, Metrobus, ferry, subway, tram, funicular). Money or credit card payment is not possible.
(Cash payments are available in Taxis. 🚕 In some taxis, credit cards are also valid.)
Istanbulcard can be purchased and credit loaded from the buffets on the streets or from automatic machines at metro/bus stops.
